ELDT Program
The Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) is a federal program that establishes the minimum training standards for new commercial truck drivers. This training consists of two parts: theory and skills training. The theory portion is conducted in a classroom setting, while the skills portion is taught behind the wheel. Drivers are required to achieve a minimum score of 80% on the theory assessment to demonstrate proficiency.
ELDT must be provided by an educator certified by FMCSA. The theory instruction must be assigned and administered by an entity listed on FMCSA’s Training Provider Registry (TPR).
ELDT includes both classroom education and behind-the-wheel training. Applicants must complete the coursework, knowledge assessment, and receive trainer’s endorsement of their driving skills before taking the formal CDL exam.
